Wymondham gin distillery wins prestigious awards

OakVilla Distillery, based in Wymondham, has won a Silver Award for its trade-mark Vryheid Gin at this year’s International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2019.

The craft gin also scooped Bronze in the Gin & Double Dutch (Cucumber & Watermelon) Tonic Award.

This is the second year in a row that the family business has been recognised in the prestigious international awards scheme, which sets the benchmark for quality and rewards only the very best wines and spirits from across the world.

Business Owner Lindi Hancke said: “The IWSC is the Oscars of the wine and spirit industry and we are over the moon to be bringing these fantastic awards home to Wymondham.”

Lindi’s husband and partner, self-proclaimed alchemist Shaun Hancke said: “We were absolutely delighted to win. As a small-batch craft gin distillery, we weren’t expecting it, as the competition has become much more competitive and scoring has been adapted by the IWSC to reflect the crowded market.”

The family’s recent success is even more remarkable given that they have only been in business since February 2018 and distilling is a far cry from the couple’s day jobs in accountancy and procurement.
The Awards, which will be presented at the Guildhall in London, are considered to be one of the highest honours in the industry.

Vryheid Gin is sold at independent wine merchants and available at prestigious hotels, restaurants and pubs around Norfolk.
