Benefit fraud

Benefit fraud is estimated to cost the taxpayer at least £2 billion per year.

The Department for Work and Pensions is responsible for investigating suspected benefit fraud. If you think someone is making a false claim or giving incorrect details you can report benefit fraud online.

Council Tax and business rates fraud

Types of Council Tax and business rates fraud could be:

  • A council taxpayer receiving a discount or exemption that they are not entitled to, for example single person discount
  • A business rate payer receiving a discount or exemption that they are not entitled to, for example empty rates.
