Our pubs play a huge part in local life and our Community Pub of the Year Awards are here to help recognise the impact they have on our community.

And the 2019 Overall Winner is...

Kings Head, Bawburgh

1. Outstanding Community Focus

This is the pub who goes over and above what is expected from them within their community. Whether they host regular events, fund raise for local causes or always makes sure there is room for your community group, this is the pub that is the most community focused.  

2. Best Customer Service

This is the pub where everybody is happy to see you. They go the extra mile in ensuring you have the best time in their pub.  From a smiley face at the bar, to the extra please and thank you, this is the pub that has the best customer service.

3. Most Family Friendly

This is the pub that welcomes you all, from the day you were born. They are ready for you all, with room for the buggy, water for your dogs and quieter areas for you all to chat, this is the pub that is the most family friendly.  

4. Tastiest Food and Drink

This is the pub you always go to for their food or their drink.  They have exactly what you want, when you want it, and it tastes delicious too. The options may be endless, or they may be just what you want, this is the pub that serves the tastiest food and drink. 

  • The pub with the most votes in each category will be a finalist.
  • Judges will visit the winning pub for each category and an overall winner will be chosen and revealed at a ceremony held at last year's winning pub.
  • The overall winner will receive £500 to spend on an event for their community.

Definition of a Pub:

 ‘The licensed premises must be open to and welcome the general public without requiring membership or residency, allow free entry (1), serve at least one draught beer (2), allow drinking without requiring food to be consumed, have at least one indoor area not laid out for meals, and permit drinks to be purchased in person at a bar (3), without relying on table service.’

(2) Includes cask or keg beer
(3) Includes also a hatch or specific service point

  • Voting is open at 9am on 1 July 2019 and closes at midnight on 8 September 2019. 
  • Votes can be made using the following methods only:
  • We will only accept one vote per category per person.
  • No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
  • There are four categories:
    • Outstanding Community Focus

  • The Communities team will assess the number of votes received for all pubs, to identify a winner for each category (the winner will be the one with most votes in that category).
  • No pub can win more than one category. If a pub is a clear winner in more than one category, they will win the category in which they have received the highest votes. 
  • A guest judging panel will visit the winning pub from each category to decide upon the overall winner. The judges will consider the relationship the pub has with their community. 
  • The decision is final and will be announced on Monday 7 October 2019.
  • Awards will be presented on Monday 7 October 2019 at the previous winner’s pub (White Lion, Wheatacre).
  • The overall winner will receive £500 to support them in holding an event for the benefit of their community. They will also be invited to our Business Awards 2020.
  • No cash or alternative prize will be offered.
  • Facebook & Instagram Competition - this competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Facebook or Instagram. The voter must be 18 years or older. South Norfolk Council staff and District Councillors cannot take part in this competition. One person will be selected at random. Prize to be collected from South Norfolk Council, South Norfolk House, Cygnet Court, Long Stratton, NR15 2XE.
