Local Plan: introduction

Summary

The South Norfolk Local Plan, adopted in 2003, contains all the policies that guide development in the district. This adopted version of the plan runs until mid 2006. Eventually, the Local Development Framework (LDF) – a new approach designed to simplify the process of development planning - will replace it. If you plan to apply for planning permission in South Norfolk, first look at the maps and policies of the Plan to see if there are any restrictions on what you can do.

This page explains the process we went through to get the Local Plan adopted, and answers some of the common questions we get about it.

Further information

Background to the South Norfolk Local Plan

Local Plans follow the guidelines set out in the Norfolk County Structure Plan which provides the strategic framework for development in the county. Norfolk County Council reviewed policies for the County to cover the period from 1988 to 2006 and the Secretary of State approved these in 1993. The South Norfolk Local Plan was prepared within the context of this 1993 Plan. The County Council then had a further review, which resulted in a revised Structure Plan being adopted in 1999. Our adopted South Norfolk Local Plan also conforms with the latest Norfolk Structure Plan.

You can find the Norfolk County Structure Plan on the Norfolk County Council website.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Local Plan do?

It is expected that East Anglia will continue to grow and change in terms of population, housing, employment, infrastructure  and community facilities. There is a need to make sure that such growth and change takes place in a co-ordinated way, and at the same time to safeguard the quality of the environment. The South Norfolk Local Plan is designed to provide a framework to guide future growth in South Norfolk up to 2006.

What area does the Local Plan cover?

The Plan Area is the whole of South Norfolk excluding the Broads Authority Area, which covers the Waveney and Yare river valleys and the Chet River valley as far inland as Loddon.

This area is covered by a separate Local Plan produced by the Broads Authority. Their website lets you download their Local Plan, along with guidance on all aspects of planning within the Broads Authority area.

The exact boundary of our Local Plan is shown on the Proposals Map, which you can download from the Area-wide policies page.
