If you intend to carry out building work on property or land that you own, then it is likely you will need planning permission. If you want to make alterations to a  listed building, you will need to obtain planning consent.

Some minor extensions and alterations to your home can be carried out without planning permission, this is known as permitted development.

    Further information

What happens if I don't apply for permission?

If you go ahead with your development without the required permission, we may ask you to make a retrospective planning application (an application for the work that has already been completed).

If it is decided that permission should not be granted you may have to put things back as they were. Find out more about the Enforcement procedure.
