This design was considered by the assessment panel to be of exceptional quality which had resulted in a distinctive landmark building. The scheme was rated very highly especially in relation to attention to detailed design and its positive contribution to contemporary architectural design.

Five steel masts form the main building of the visitor centre, which support the innovative double skinned tensile roof structure which consists of an inner layer of 'tissue' insulation between the structural outer and supportive inner membranes. Underfloor heating and mast mounted lighting leave the internal spaces open and uncluttered for the display of merchandise. Cedar cladding and glazing form the perimeter walls and careful attention has been given to the detailed design of window and door openings.

The assessment panel considered this scheme to be of exceptional quality and were particularly impressed with the meticulous attention to detailed design throughout, environmental sustainability issues and the successful visual relationship between the contemporary design and the historic building.

The scheme has re-used and extended the existing brick and flint single storey buildings at the rear with further extensions to the rear of the main house including a staircase tower linking all three storeys. These are constructed in red brick to provide a visual link with the brick quoins of the outbuildings whilst contrasting with the colour washed walls of the original house.
