Architect : Charles Emberson, Norwich

Chauffeur's Cottage is typical of the simple vernacular buildings in this area of Langley and Chedgrave and is of brick construction with tiled roofs and decorative bargeboards. The new extension provides additional living accommodation with a sleeping gallery above, linked to the existing building with a new glazed dining room. The Design Award Assessment Panel considered the design to be a particularly distinctive solution which demonstrated how the traditional materials of brick, timber cladding, clay pantiles and leadwork could be used in a contemporary manner and successfully integrated into a historic context.

Whilst the simple form of the extension relates closely to the existing cottage, the design offers a complete contrast, but at the same time allows the original building to remain the most dominant element visually. Careful attention has been given to details such as the joinery elements and the use of glazing at the junctions between the old and the new.

Meadow Farm is an early 18th century brick cottage with a pantiled roof, to the south of which is an 18th century barn with stables and a hay loft. Both buildings are listed Grade II.

This scheme involved the conversion of the barn to provide living accommodation with a galleried area above, retaining the full height volume with the timber frame exposed and a new glazed entrance hall linking the cottage. A new extension has also been added to the cottage providing additional bedroom accommodation, which echoes the style of the original building.

Architects : Stead Mutton Associates, Sheringham

Brooke-Meadow Way is the first phase of a larger development by Norfolk Homes Ltd. A strong sense of place has been created through the layout of the site, the use of distinctive landmark buildings such as the curved terrace and the varied use of boundary walls.

The retention of the existing mature trees throughout the site has also contributed to quality of open spaces between buildings.
