Wind turbines & planning permission

Summary

More people are coming to us to ask if they need planning permission for domestic wind turbines. There has been a sudden growth of interest in installing them, because more of you are seeing them in the shops and taking an interest in the local and national debate on turbines.

Although the Government has said it wants to change the legislation to make installing these turbines easier, this has not yet happened. It means we are still bound by the current Government legislation, and this says that due to technical requirements about where these turbines can be placed, planning permission is needed.

Further information

Renewable energy and the Local Plan

We have an Adopted Local Plan which includes a policy called UTL13 "Renewable Energy". This sets out the criteria we have to consider when we assess planning applications for such proposals.

You can download the policy from our Local Plan area-wide policies page (click on the link called '4.2 Utilities/community development).

Applications for domestic wind turbines

If you do want to make an application, you will need to show the design and position on the property, and explain why you have chosen these, because this is unique to each application.

You will also need to give us technical details about the design of the turbines, including the noise produced at different wind speeds and at different distances. These details should be available from the manufacturer.
