How to comment on a planning application

Summary

It is your right to comment on planning applications that have been submitted to us, and you can comment online via our Planning Explorer on any planning application where the consultation period is still open.

Important!

You need to know that this is a public website and your comments will be seen by everyone, along with your name, signature, address and any contact details you supply (e.g. telephone number and email address).

Make sure that your comments are relevant and not defamatory or offensive, because you remain personally and legally responsible for them. We reserve the right to remove from this website the entirety of any comment which contains any words which are or may be defamatory or offensive.

If you are worried about identity theft as a result of your details being published on our website, read the guidance below on how to comment on applications without including your signature, email address or phone number.

How to comment on a planning application

  1. First you need to find the application you wish to make comments on. If you know the application reference number you can go straight to the details of the application by doing an application number search.
  2. If you don't know the application reference number, there are many ways you can search the system for applications. See our page on Latest planning information online for help with searching the Planning Explorer.
  3. Once you have got to the details of a planning application, you will see a link in red near the top of the page called 'add your comments' - follow this link to send your comments to us.
  4. If the application is no longer open for consultation, the link will not appear.
  5. If you would prefer not to send us your comments on a planning application online, you can either email or post them to us - our contact details are at the foot of this page. Remember to inlcude the planning application reference number.
  6. Remember that any comments you send, whether they are sent online or by email or post, will be published on this website for everyone to see, and we reserve the right to remove from this website the entirety of any comment which contains any words which are or may be defamatory or offensive.

Identity theft

If you are worried about your contact details and signature appearing on our website, do the following when you comment on planning applications:

  1. Print your name instead of adding your signature to any documents, and initial the printed name.
  2. Send e-mailed comments as an attachment, so that only the attachment can be published (and not your email address).
  3. Do not include your telephone number if you do not want people to know it.

If you don't think this is enough to protect your identity, then send your comments to your local councillor, who will make sure they are taken into account when any decision is made.
