Caistor Roman Town (Venta Icenorum)

Before & after the Romans

Summary

The people who lived in Britain in the Iron Age were called 'Celts' by the Romans. The tribe of Celts living in Norfolk were called the Iceni. In AD 43 the Romans came to conquer Britain and changed the history of the country forever.

Further information

Under Roman rule, the British came under Roman influences -including streets that were laid out in a grid system, and Roman crafts.

In about AD 200 the tribes of Angles, Saxons and Frisians from Northern Germany and Holland, began to attack the British coastline. The Romans were eventually defeated. The British now came under the influences of the new settlers, the Anglo Saxons.
