Smockhill CommonLocation: Smockmill Common is located very near to Newton Flotman off the A140.

Status: A designated nature reserve, the Common is owned by Shotesham Estate, but licensed to South Norfolk Council to provide ‘open air recreation’ for the local community.

Habitats: Smockmill Common has a variety of habitats including woodland, grassland and fen along the river.

Management: The woodland is managed to improve structural diversity by selective coppicing and removal of invasive species. The long-term aim is to return the meadow to a wildflower meadow, which will be achieved by mowing during the year and clearing encroaching scrub.

Flora and fauna: There is a rich diversity in the flora at Smockmill Common due to the different habitats.

Spring: Water Crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis), Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis)

Summer: Marsh Helleborine (Epipactis palustris), Marsh Pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris)

Autumn: Grass Snake (Natrix natrix), Field Vole (Microtus agrestis)

Winter: Otter (Lutra lutra), Long tailed Tits (Aegithalus caudatus)
