Poringland WoodLocation: Poringland Wood is an area of 10 hectares adjacent to Framingham Earl High School (Grid Reference TG 260035).

Status: The wood is owned by the Crown Point Estate and managed by South Norfolk Council and the Norwich Fringe Project.

It is used by the local community for ‘quiet enjoyment’.

Habitats: there is a mixture of grassland and woodland in Poringland Wood. Sleepers Meadow is managed as a wildflower meadow to encourage moths and butterflies. The woodland consists of broadleaved, heath and coppice woodland with an additional plantation for trees destroyed in the 1987 gales.

Management: The meadow is cut each year to encourage wildflower growth and to prevent the spread of scrub and brambles. There is ongoing removal of trees within the plantation to form glades, which in turn improve the age structure and diversity of the wood.

Flora and fauna: An interesting plant found in Poringland wood is the green-ribbed sedge, which although common in Northern Britain is considered scarce within Norfolk.

Spring: Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta)

Summer: Enchanters Nightshade (Circaea lutetiana), Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera), Green Ribbed Sedge (Carex binervis)

Autumn: Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa)

Winter: Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis), Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus major), Nuthatch (Sitta europaea), Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris)
