Further information

Photograph of Dunston CommonDunston Common is a mixed habitat consisting of a large open area of grassland to the east with semi-mature woodland to the west. The grassland area is managed for informal recreation and is regularly mowed through out the growing season. The grassland area resembles that of a traditional estate park landscape with a number of mature oaks, birch and sweet chestnut trees being prominent in this area.

The woodland area was badly damaged during the 1987 gales with many mature trees being blown over or damaged. As result dense birch woodland has developed, which has been assisted by the planting of other species: oak, holly and hornbeam. Hazel is also in the wood.

A car park gives access to the site, with the majority of users being local dog owners.
