Dunston commonLocation: Dunston Common is located about three miles south of Norwich, off the A140 (Grid Reference TG 227 025).

Status: County Wildlife Site (268).

The site is owned by South Norfolk Council and managed in a partnership with the Norwich Fringe Project. A car park gives access to the site, with the majority of users being local dog owners.

Habitats: Dunston Common has a large open area of grassland to the east and an area of semi-mature woodland to the west.

Management: The grassland area is managed for informal recreation and is mown to control scrub/bramble encroachment. Areas of birch have been thinned and left as glades to create a more diverse age structure in the wood and to encourage flowering plants and butterflies.

Flora and fauna: The grassland vegetation contains harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), ladies bedstraw (Galium verum) and sheep’s sorrel (Rumex acetosella).

Look out for:

Spring: Dunnock (Prunella modularis), Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis), Dog’s Mercury (Mercurialis perennis)

Summer: Water crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis), Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata)

Autumn: Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria), Parasitic bolete and Earthstar (Geastrum triplex)

Winter: Muntjac deer (Muntiacus montanus), Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis)
