Further information

What is it?

Physical Activity Referral is available through your GP, nurse or other health care professional. They can refer you to your nearest Leisure Centre or Exercise Referral class. A variety of activities are available and all of the activities are under the safe guidance of qualified instructors. All ages are welcome from 16 upwards.

How can it help me?

Regular physical activity that makes you warmer and breathe harder has lots of health benefits.

For example, it can help if you've got:

  • asthma
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease
  • arthritis
  • back pain.

If you're:

  • over weight - regular exercise raises your metabolic rate so you can begin to burn off the calories more efficiently.
  • stressed - exercise is one of the best ways to relax and switch off from your worries.
  • depressed - work on your body and feel your mood lift and improve.

How can I get involved?

If you haven't been active for a while and/or have a medical condition that would benefit from you being more active, it is likely that you can join the programme. If your GP, nurse or other Healthcare professional feels that you are appropriate, you may then be referred.

(Please note that for your own safety the scheme will not accept people with certain conditions.)

What happens next?

Once a referral form has been filled in take this form along to your nearest centre (please see reverse for specific sites). You will then be invited to attend a free consultation, where the programme will be explained to you. We will also carry out some simple health checks, complete all the necessary paperwork and discuss your chosen suitable activity.

Badminton playerWhat activities are available?

There is a range of activities to choose from, choose something that you will enjoy and that fits into your lifestyle. We offer:

  • Cardiovascular sessions (in the gym)
  • Resistance/free weights (in the gym)
  • Exercise Classes (where appropriate)
  • Badminton (where appropriate)
  • Supervised health walks with Central Norfolk Health Walks
  • Swimming (where appropriate)
  • Aqua fit (where appropriate).

Trained specialist instructors will be on hand to make sure you have a suitable programme, to monitor your progress and make adjustments where necessary and to keep a look out for any problems or worries that you may have.

When you have completed your programme (12 sessions) we hope you will maintain your more active lifestyle by trying new activities or continuing with the one you have been doing. A final report will then be sent to your GP and the scheme instructors will offer you advice on remaining active.

Where do I get the referral form?

You can collect the form from your local GP practice.
