Benefits of working at South Norfolk Council
Further information
Our culture
We have a friendly and customer-focussed culture which aims to give value for money to our residents. Our open plan office and informative intranet site encourages us to work in a transparent way and ensures we are all aware of what is happening.
Car parking
We are able to offer free car parking to all of our employees.
Pension scheme
The Local Government Pension is a final salary scheme. The Local Government Pension Scheme website tells you all about how it works.
Holiday
We are able to offer you 23 days holiday per year from the day you start. You will also be entitled to 8.5 paid bank holidays. Once you have been with us for five years your entitlement rises to 28 days.
We take into account people’s continuous service. So you may join us from another council and find you can automatically receive the extra days, or you have only a few months to go before you qualify.
Flexible working arrangements
Many of our staff work under our flexible working scheme. This allows you to pick and choose your start and finish time (subject to the needs of the service you work in).
You may find that you begin to collect more hours than you are contracted for and in this case you can ‘spend’ these hours on extra days off.
Commitment and consultation
We have had our Investors in People status for six years now and are committed to holding on to the award. You can learn more about our Investor in People award in our page about How we can help you progress your career.
We also have a strong union presence, primarily in the form of UNISON. Our Staff Forum meets on a monthly basis to talk about the issues which matter to our staff.
We came eighth in The Times newspaper's Best Councils to Work For competition, which was run in conjunction with the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA). Read the press release.
Career development
The tone is set for your career development from the moment your receive your customised Career and Development File. This is sent with your contract of employment and details our approach to learning.
Our appraisal scheme will allow you to highlight training needs annually. We also offer a protected learning hour. For staff at our main office you will be able to attend a variety of sessions covering many different themes. If you don’t find the topic of particular interest then you are more than welcome to do some self-directed learning at your desk instead.
For more information on our current learning initiatives and approaches to development please see How we can help you progress your career.
