Giving up smoking

Summary

No smoking sign in a restaurant

Smoking kills. Cigarettes contain 4,000 chemicals - including arsenic - and 50 of these can cause cancer. Smoking raises your risk on lung cancer, heart disease, stomach ulcers, psoriasis and respiratory disease.

If you want to give up, call the NHS smoking helpline: 0800 169 0169.

Further information

Breathing second hand smoke increases other people’s chance of throat cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. 17,000 under-fives are taken into hospital each year because of their parents smoking.
