Petitions to Downing Street

Summary

Downing Street sign

Petitions have long been used as a way to let the government know the strength of feeling in communities over numerous issues.

In the past, you would have had to send a petition by post, or deliver it to Number 10 in person. Now you can create and sign petitions online.

How to create or sign a petition

  1. Visit the e-Petitions website - petitions.pm.gov.uk [external link];
  2. Choose whether you want to create a new petition or sign an existing one.

Signing a petition

  1. Choose from a list of current petitions by subject, or search for what you're interested in;
  2. Click on the title of the petition you're interested in;
  3. Provide your name, email address, postal address and postcode;
  4. Click on the 'Sign' button.

Starting a new petition

  1. Click on the 'Create a petition' link;
  2. You'll be asked to check there are no petitions covering the same subject, so do a search with the most appropriate keyword;
  3. If there's no matching petitions, you'll see a 'create petition' button - click on it;
  4. Follow the four step process to setting up the petition.
