Radiation monitoring

Summary

Since the Chernobyl incident we have routinely monitored background Gamma radiation levels, and fed the information into the Norfolk Local Authorities Radiation Monitoring Group (NLARMG). Background levels are low and vary very little. The information provided is summarised annually, and supplied to the National Network RIMNET (Radiation Incident Monitoring Network).

Further information

Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring gas which frequently occurs where the underlying rock is granite. It is found extensively in the West Country and in Northampton. In South Norfolk it is not much of an issue as levels have been found to be very low.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) are the experts in this field, and there are links to their web pages below.

Advice for homeowners

We have also produced a brief leaflet for those within the South Norfolk district who may be concerned about statistical information on radon risks. You can download this by following the link above.
