Pest control: fleas

Summary

We can treat fleas in both domestic and commercial premises for a fee (see our Environmental Services charges for current prices). If you get council tax benefit, housing benefit or pension credit then this service is free.

Fleas are very hard to get rid of and our Pest Control Officer will need your help to treat them! To request a visit from a Pest Control Officer, follow the instructions below.

Further information

FleaTreating fleas

For the treatment to be successful you must do the following before we visit:

  • If you have any pets, they must be treated for fleas and have their bedding washed.
  • People and pets will have to be out of the building while the treatment is taking place, and for a minimum of three hours afterwards.
  • Your property must be vacuumed thoroughly before the treatment, preferably the night before. Dispose of the bag or clean the vacuum cleaner (if it is bag-less). The contents should be bagged up and put outside in your rubbish bin.
  • Make sure as much floor space as possible is cleared (e.g. toys, books, clothes etc). There's no need to move large furniture (e.g. dressers or wardrobes).
  • Make sure everything from underneath the beds is cleared.

Reinfestation

Your property will have to be left for at least three hours after the treatment for it to work. If the above has not been carried out, reinfestation is likely to occur.

Payments

Treatment from our Pest Control Officers can only be booked in if we receive payment in advance. See our Service charges for details of the fee.

Payment can be made via telephone using credit/debit card, or cheque/postal orders can be sent to us by post. See Making payments to South Norfolk Council for details.

Treatment process

When you request an appointment you will be offered a date (Monday to Fridays only). An officer will visit your property on that date, between the hours of 9am – 3.30pm. You must be there for this visit.

On that day you are welcome to call us from 9am, giving us the reference number, and we can then give you a three hour time slot for when our Pest Control Officer will visit.

Service standards

We will do our best to make sure we deliver this service to you in the timescales given below. Due to increases in demand these may not always be met.

  • We aim to treat problems inside your premises within three working days.

See our Pest Control Service leaflet for information on what to look for, prevention and control. You can download the leaflet by following the link under 'Downloads' above.
