What you CAN put in your green bin

Green tick - yes, you can put paper in the green bin

Paper – e.g. telephone directories, newspapers, magazines, junk mail and flyers, scraps of paper, shopping lists.

Green tick - yes, you can put card & cardboard in the green bin

Card and cardboard – e.g. packaging from electrical items, cereal boxes, sleeves from ready meals, detergent boxes.

Green tick - yes, you can put plastic bottles in the green bin

Plastic bottles – e.g. water, detergent, fabric conditioner, shampoo, washing up liquid, pop and squash bottles. Find out about plastic recycling.

Green tick - yes, you can put cans in the green bin

Cans – e.g. fizzy drinks cans, baked bean tins.

Green tick - yes, you can put metal arosols in the green bin

Metal aerosols – e.g. deodorant, room freshener, hairspray, hair mousse.


What you should NOT put in your green bin

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put shredded paper in the green bin

Shredded paper – add to compost heap, take to recycling banks or  or place in grey rubbish bin.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put envelopes in the green bin

Envelopes – can be recycled at some of the recycling banks or put in grey rubbish bin.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put glass in the green bin

Glass – take to nearest glass bank.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put plastic tubs/pots in the green bin

Plastic tubs/pots - e.g. margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, washing baskets. Put in grey rubbish bin.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put plastic cartons in the green bin

Plastic cartons - e.g. fruit juice or milk cartons (tetrapak). Put in grey rubbish bin.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put plastic bags in the green bin

Plastic bags – e.g. black sacks, carrier bags. Put in grey rubbish bin.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put polystyrene paper in the green bin

Polystyrene – e.g. meat and fruit trays.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put foil in the green bin

Foil – e.g. food wrappers. Put in grey rubbish bin.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put metals (e.g. saucepans, clothes nagers) in the green bin

Other metals e.g. saucepans, clothes airers, coat hangers. Put in grey rubbish bin or pass on if in good condition.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put toys in the green bin

Children’s toys – dontate to charity or local library/doctors surgeries if good quality. If not put in grey rubbish bin.

Red cross - no, you shouldn't put clothes & shoes in the green bin

Clothes and shoes – if good quality these should be donated to a charity shop. They can also be taken to recycling centres that can recycle textiles & clothes or shoes. If not put in grey rubbish bin.

We can accept the following items in your grey rubbish bin:

  • Kitchen scraps and waste – e.g. meat/fish bones, vegetable peelings , and;
  • General waste – e.g. cigarette ends.
