How waste is collected in South Norfolk

Summary

Since 2002 we have been operating a twin bin collection system. Each property in South Norfolk has been given one green bin for recycling and one grey bin for rubbish (or a suitable alternative if the property cannot accommodate bins).

We ask you to separate your rubbish between the two bins so we can recycle plastic bottles, food cans & tins, paper, cardboard and metal aerosols.

We have had an extensive network of mini recycling centres where you could recycle glass and paper for the last decade, but unfortunately many people did not choose to use these sites.

Recycle, not landfill

Research tells us that approximately 60% of the rubbish thrown away by the average household can be recycled. Landfill sites (big holes in the ground that are filled with rubbish) are running out. Finding new sites is difficult - suitable holes in the ground are very hard to find.

Recycling household rubbish is one of the simplest and best ways to reduce the impact on the environment, and hence the contribution to climate change. Carbon dioxide and methane emissions from landfill sites and other waste processes contribute to global warming.

How does the collection system work?

One week we collect the green recycling bins, the following week we collect the grey rubbish bins. And so on. The bins are always collected on the same day of the week, except for bank holidays and at Christmas/New Year, when special arrangements are made.

To see a copy of your collection calendar and find out what day your waste is collected visit the Rubbish & recycling collection calendar page.
