Report an accident

Summary

Certain accidents involving employees or other people - including members of the public - as a result of work activities must be reported, as part of the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 1995.

How to report an accident

  1. Check the incident is covered by the RIDDOR regulations ('Further information' below);
  2. Contact us online, or by e-mail, telephone, or letter (our details are at the foot of this page);
  3. Information we will need from you:
    - your full name;
    - your full address including your postcode;
    - your home telephone number and a number which we can contact you on during normal office hours if this is different;
    - your email address (if applicable);
    - how you would like us to respond to you, and;
    - details of the accident (e.g. location, who is involved, the nature of the accident).

Further information

Types of incidents

You should report the following types of incidents to us:

  • fatalities;
  • major injuries;
  • injuries which result in absence from work for more than three days;
  • dangerous occurrences, and;
  • industrial diseases.

These situations should be reported to us where they happen inside our district. They should also be reported to the Health & Safety Executive's Incident Contact Centre, which you can do online at the RIDDOR website [external link].
