Oil co-operatives

Summary

For those people use oil, deliveries can be an expensive lump sum with prices vastly increased over the last two years. However, there are potential savings to be made if you join or create a local oil co-operative.

Further information

The business behind it is simple. A number of people in the same area join together so the supplier can send out a bigger tanker on a single journey, rather than several smaller ones and therefore make a saving on transport costs. The oil buyer is then able to gain a cheaper price per litre than on an ordinary delivery.

There are a number of existing co-operatives, but if you don’t know of any, try ringing your oil supplier and asking them if there are any in your area. They should give you the details of the main contact and from there it’s just a simple phone call. Alternatively, if there are more than ten households having oil delivered close to you, then it might be worth starting your own co-operative. If you do, make sure you continue to shop around for the best deal.
