Grants available for energy efficiency

Summary

Around 25% of the heat in your home can be lost through a roof which isn’t well insulated and 35% of heat is lost through walls which are not well insulated. Insulating your home can give you significant savings on your heating bills. If you need to top up the insulation in your loft or install cavity wall insulation, grants are available from the Warm Front scheme.

There are also grants available for renewable technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines through the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

Carbon Emission Reduction Target

The government’s Carbon Emission Reduction Target (CERT) gives targets to all large energy suppliers for improving home energy efficiency. The suppliers therefore provide a range of offers to residents which significantly reduce the cost of installing energy efficiency measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation.

Everyone qualifies for the standard grant, but you have to be over 70 or on benefits for "free" insulation. There is a maximum size of property allowed under the grant scheme but either the council or your local installer will be able to give you further information.

Due to changes in demand the waiting times to have insulation work carried out does tend to go up and down but we are in constant contact with installers to try and make our residents aware of this. Current waiting times are around 3 weeks until a survey is carried out and around 6 weeks until insulation is fully installed (figures from those installers with funding available).

Warm Front Scheme

Warm Front makes homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient. The Warm Front Grant provides a package of insulation and heating improvements up to the value of £2,700 (or £4,000 if oil central heating is recommended). It is a Government funded initiative, and the scheme is managed by Eaga. Residents receiving any of the following benefits or allowances may qualify for a Warm Front Grant:

  • Income Support
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Disabled Persons Tax Credit
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • War Disablement Pension
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit

Warm Front aim to have your property surveyed within 21 working days with the installation completed within 120 days. These figures can change depending upon levels of demand.

Low Carbon Buildings Programme

The Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) provides grants for the installation of microgeneration technologies in households. Technologies eligible for grants include solar panels, wind turbines, and ground source heat pumps.

Householders can apply for grants of up to £2,500 per property towards the cost of installing a certified product by a certified installer.
