Scrutiny Committee (11)

Because the Cabinet has so much power and is usually single-party, the Scrutiny Committee's main role is to hold Cabinet to account. Members of the Council can "call in" Cabinet decisions before they are implemented. Scrutiny Committee often scrutinises proposed policy changes before decisions are made and advises Cabinet or Council accordingly.

Accounts, Governance and Audit Committee (6)

This committee scrutinises the accounts and ultimately approves them, supervises the activity of the internal auditor, considers the reports of the internal auditor and keeps the Council's governance arrangement under review.

Licensing, Appeals and Complaints Committee/Licensing & Gambling Acts Committee (15)

These two committees (with a common membership) recommend licensing policies to the Council. They consider individual licensing cases and hear appeals. They also hear a small number of complaints refered to them when the main complaints process has been exhusted, and decide what to do about serial complainants.

Sites Sub-Committee (6)

This committee carries out site visits on behalf of the planning committees and advises them. It also determines appeals against officer decisions about Tree Preservation Orders.
