Wymondham Councillor Joe Mooney has welcomed a new initiative by South Norfolk Council to help the town's high school pupils stay safe this Christmas.

The Council Communities Team will be joining Wymondham High School pupils as they go for lunch tomorrow (Tuesday 15 December), advising them on keeping safe at Christmas, and marking up their mobile phones to make them traceable.

They will be joined by a Police Community Support Officer from the town, and will be running an advice stall with the backing of Norfolk County Council and the school.

High School Deputy Head Peter Wadlow said:

"This is all about keeping young people safe this Christmas, which is a very important message, and we fully support what the communities team are doing here.

"They will set out their stall in the dinning hall with leaflets and advice and we will be directing our hundreds of hungry pupils towards them!"

Wymondham Councillor Joe Mooney, a former Chairman of South Norfolk Council said:

"Christmas is a fantastic time of year for young people, with everyone having a great time. We want to keep it that way by making sure they get straightforward, common sense advice so they can enjoy themselves and stay safe.

"It's an excellent initiative and I hope it can be extended to other schools across South Norfolk."

The mobile phones will be marked with postcodes and names in ultra violet, and there will also be advice covering everything from avoiding avoid anti-social behaviour to ensuring they consider having enough money at the end of an evening to get home, safely.

The team's work in the school is a new departure. Previously, Council staff "talked at" pupils in assembly. Now the team want to talk with them during the less formal lunchtime atmosphere.

If the trial works, the team will consider approaching other schools in the South Norfolk community to see if they can do then same.
