South Norfolk Council has welcomed its rating and that of the wider county under a new and much tougher local government and area inspection regime.

The Audit Commission Joint Inspectorate, which has just announced its findings on areas and councils across England, rated South Norfolk Council as "performs well".

It follows a rigorous inspection under the new Comprehensive Area Assessment or CAA.  This replaces Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA).    The Joint Inspectorate report on Norfolk, using a new green flag/red flag system, awarded it one green flag and no red flags.

South Norfolk Council Leader John Fuller said:

"We are delighted with both reports because they show South Norfolk Council is not just rated highly in its own district, but contributes to improving life in the wider county. When a Norfolk district council gets a high score, it helps everyone in the county.

"CAA has tested us where it matters most, on delivering for our residents, improving their quality of life and providing efficient, value for money services, and we've passed with flying colours."

It its South Norfolk Council organisational assessment, the report said:

- "It looks after its money carefully and makes savings where it can. The Council performs well in the priorities that are important to local people.

- It delivers services efficiently, helps to build affordable homes, reduces crime and antisocial behaviour, improves the local environment and is helping create jobs."

- The Council "understands what local people want and makes sure that its services meet these needs. For example one of the top priorities is housing, and local people benefited from 403 more affordable homes which is an excellent achievement for a single district council."

- It praised the Council's work with local partners "to improve health and create jobs and with the police to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour."

- It also said "public satisfaction with the district as a place to live remains very high."

Chief Executive Sandra Dinneen responded saying:

"Staff are proud of South Norfolk and believe in improving the quality of life and work hard as a team to deliver this.

"We value, respect and respond to people and deliver on our promises to them. Our staff are ambitious and resourceful, and that comes through very strongly in our assessment.

"We won't hide that we are delighted, but we are not complacent. We will continue focussing on our community, first and last."
