South Norfolk Council’s Market Towns Task Group is bringing Diss retailers and business leaders together for a summit to discuss promoting the town.

Around 130 businesses have been invited to the meeting next Wednesday evening (2 December), which is 5.45pm for a 6pm start in the Corn Hall.

The meeting is by invitation only and letters were hand-delivered to the businesses last week.

Top of the agenda will be how South Norfolk Council and its partners can work with the town to help promote the retail and businesses offer.

Councillor Jeremy Savage is Chairman of the Task Group, and will lead the meeting.

He said:

“The feeling we have from businesses in the town is that they don’t want to waste any time bemoaning how difficult things are and whose fault it may be.

“They know the district council does not have all the answers or a district council taxpayers fund to pour into Diss. That’s not what they want and they live in the real world just like the Council.

“They are looking at what we and others can do to assist them in promoting their fantastic market town and its many great businesses and opportunities.

“We need to build that confidence further, while looking for practical ways we can help. I urge all the businesses invited to respond positively to this.”

Diss district and town councillor Glyn Walden said:

“We are hoping for a good response to this because we know how passionately retailers and businesses in the town feel about its future.

“We have to move forward and tell everyone what we know already - that Diss is very special indeed.”

The meeting will look at five general themes: high rents; signage, marketing, and promotion; parking, access, transport and bus station; opening hours and finally crime and anti-social behaviour.

After the meeting, task group officials will look for "quick wins" and longer term strategic changes, which can improve the town immediately and then in the medium to long term.

The meeting in Diss is the Task Group’s first and it will meet in the district's other market towns in the future.
