Benefits team wins national award

South Norfolk Council benefits team has won a major national award for its work.
The prestigious Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation award for "Benefits Team of the Year" comes at a time when staff have seen an 11% rise in their caseload during the worst recession in living memory.
South Norfolk Councillor Garry Wheatley, Cabinet Member for Staffing, Resources and Finance said:
"This award means we have the best benefits team in Britain and it recognises their hard work, professional dedication and total commitment to helping some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our community.
"The Council is here to look after you at your time of greatest need. Often people get into difficulty through no fault of their own, and if the worst should happen, we are here with the best service in the country."
In 2007, South Norfolk Council introduced freephones so that those on low incomes or in difficulties could call the council free on 0808 178 7143 for benefits advice.
