Wymondham is celebrating its diverse heritage by throwing open the doors of twelve of its best-loved buildings.

Historically-rich properties such as the famous 12th century Abbey and the unusual octagonal Market Cross will be open from the 10-13 September for the public to visit free of charge.

There will also be a host of talks, guided tours, film screenings and displays for people of all ages to enjoy.

This will be the first time that South Norfolk has participated in the Heritage Open Days run by English Heritage.

South Norfolk Council has been working closely with Norwich Heart to pilot the scheme in Wymondham:

Deputy Leader, Councillor Martin Wilby said:

“Wymondham is a gem of a market town and has a lot to offer, not just a fascinating past, but great shops and pubs too. We hope these open days will attract tourists and give local businesses a real boost.

“Everyone in Wymondham has been extremely supportive of this project. We hope we can expand on its success next year in both Wymondham and across the other market towns of South Norfolk.”

Among the historical delights on offer, visitors will be given the chance to meet a costumed monk at Wymondham Abbey, enjoy guided tours and climb the bell tower.

The Regal Cinema will be offering a behind the scenes tour of the vintage 1930s projection room and screening “Norfolk Past - The County our Parents Knew” at 2pm and 3.30pm on Sunday 13 September.

Other local sites include, 12th century Becket’s Chapel, the heritage Railway Station, the Heritage Museum and the Town Council Offices.

Local business will also be taking part and opening their lesser-known timber-framed buildings to shed light on the more secret side of Wymondham’s past.
