Three cheers for Council’s top five pubs
Released on 19 August 2009
This competition is all about celebrating and supporting these pubs which are at the very heart of our local communities.

South Norfolk Council has taken a step closer to finding its overall winner in its Community Pub of the Year Award.
Having received hundreds of texts, emails and calls from the public, the judging panel has whittled the nominees down to 5 neighbourhood winners.
Congratulations go to the King’s Head, Hethersett (Northern River Valleys), The Countryman, Tasburgh (Tas Valley), The Pelican, Tacolneston (Wymondham and West), Ferry House, Surlingham (Eastern River Valleys) and The Cock Inn, Diss (Waveney Valley).
On Tuesday 1 September judges will be visiting the 5 shortlisted pubs and choosing an overall South Norfolk winner.
Judge and Deputy Leader Councillor Martin Wilby, said:
“We were extremely impressed by the standard of applications which made judging this competition a very difficult process.”
To be in with a chance of winning, the pubs had to meet some tough criteria, particularly when it came to community involvement.
Councillor Sue Thomson, Chairman of the Licensing Committee and also on the judging panel, commented:
“With post offices and local shops closing, pubs are often the only places where local people can meet up and socialize.
“It’s great to see so many pubs holding charity events, running sports teams and getting people of all ages involved in fun activities.
“This competition is all about celebrating and supporting these pubs which are at the very heart of our local communities.”
All shortlisted pubs will be presented with a “South Norfolk Community Pub of the Year Award” plaque and the winner will be announced at a special presentation reception hosted by the Council Chairman Bev Spratt.
The overall winner will receive a plaque and the services of the Council's Culture & Sports Development team, who will organise a fun event at their pub in summer 2010.
This award was launched as part of the Council's bigger fight to save pubs from closure, a campaign which has taken it from meetings in Long Stratton to the corridors of power in Parliament.
