Zimbabwe's 'famous five' go gum boot crazy
Released on 21 July 2009
Norfolk's hidden tourist gem the Forncett Steam Museum is expecting ticket-holders to get very hot under the collar this weekend (25 July) when a Zimbabwean a-cappella and dance group go leaping and stomping.
Every ticket has gone for the lively and long-awaitied Gum Boot Steam-up evening performance by the Black Umfolosi 5.
This world famous five from Africa are also holding an afternoon workshop on the same day - with a short lively performance to finish on a high. Tickets for that were snapped up too.
South Norfolk Council is supporting the event through its hugely successful Festival of the Arts.
Councillor Michelle Monck, Cabinet Member for Leisure says the performances and workshop will be a treat for those who got their tickets in time.
"These guys are among the most exciting entertainers in the world today. Their bare-torsoed, hard-hatted gum boot finale never fails to grab an audience, which is urged to join in.
"They are only touring the UK for a limited time so those who managed to get tickets for these performances and the workshop are in for a treat."
Black Umfolosi 5 are energy-driven and engaging, mixing gentleness of spirit and song with exuberant dance. Their trademark harmonies mixed with intricate rhythms, clicking and clapping are highlighted during brilliantly choreographed shows with subtle to vibrant stomping and leaping.
They are best known for their gum boot dance finale, showcasing the traditional styles and rituals of South Africa's mining regions.
The event is the latest sell-out success in this year's South Norfolk Festival of the Arts.
The Festival has seen everything from giant musical spheres on the broad at Whitlingham to authentic American Civil War enactments on the village green at Hingham.
August is packed with fun events, including a "Make Do and Mend"celebration of the war years at the 100th Bomb Group Museum, Dickleburgh on August 8, the Fleeting Flames fire performance at Brockdish Sculpture Meadow on 22 August, and the Operababes at St John's Church, Harleston, on August 25.
