Brilliant Bacon comes back to life!
Released on 26 June 2009
Bacon's paintings still disturb and amaze, and what's uncanny about Pip Utton's portrayal is how like the artist he really is

The torrid and extraordinary life of one of England's most brilliant artists comes to the famous Sainsbury Centre next week, thanks to South Norfolk Festival of the Arts.
Francis Bacon who had a reputation for gambling, hard drinking and destroying his own paintings, inspired the Brit art movement and "comes back to life" in an award-winning portrayal by one of Britain's best fringe actors.
Pip Utton is at the leading edge of monodrama - a theatrical or operatic piece played by a single actor or singer, usually portraying one character.
His portrayals of Hitler, Chaplin, and Tony Hancock have won acclaim as masterpieces and his acting as a masterclass.
Councillor Michelle Monck, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said those fortunate to book a ticket in time should prepare for an intense and funny rollercoaster ride through the obsessions of this art genius at his best, and worst.
"It will be an eye-opener. Bacon took the British and international art worlds by storm.
"Bacon's paintings still disturb and amaze, and what's uncanny about Pip Utton's portrayal is how like the artist he really is.
"The Sainsbury centre has one of the best collections of Bacon's early art, which means people can see these first, then brace themselves for an insight into the force that produced them."
Utton is known as a doyen of the Edinburgh Fringe one-man show. He will take his audience through a day in the complex and destructive life of the man who claimed to be a 'very ordinary person' who liked to throw himself in the gutter, where every artist wanted to be!
The performance is on Wednesday 1 July, from 6.30pm to 8pm. Between 5pm and 6pm there are guided tours of the centre and Bacon's works. The Tour is £1 and the performance, £8.50. Just call 01603 593199 to book now.
