A district council in Norfolk is launching an ambitious bid to wow the crowds at its Midsummer Chillax event at Whitlingham Country Park.

The highlight of a packed evening of "uber-chilled" relaxation and spectacle will be two giant musical spheres, one containing a flautist and the other an aerial dancer, floating across the Broad.

It will be a first for the Broad, and one of the highlights of a free evening, which starts at 6pm, on Saturday 20 June.

The evening will also include a walk-through inflatable colourdome, and sculptures on the beach at Little Broad made from 80 tonnes of imported sand.

There is excellent music from Transept and Rory McVicar, both on the Arts Council programme for promising bands.

Councillor Michelle Monck, South Norfolk Cabinet Member for Leisure, has been the driving force behind the biggest festival the council has ever organised with over 80 events running from May to September.

It's the council's determination to entertain the 'staycation' generation of British holidaymakers this year, and to banish recession blues.

She said:

"The Chillax is an evening of uber chilled-out music, art and entertainment set in the stunning backdrop of Whitlingham Broad, plus it's free!

"It's a highlight in the South Norfolk Festival programme and our attempt to counter the economic doom and gloom with a range of free and low cost, fun and culturally vibrant events for local residents and visitors to enjoy.

"If you're planning a staycation this Summer, then one of our South Norfolk Festival events should be on your list of things to do!"

Among the other highlights coming soon are, Wednesday 1 July, the "Life of Francis Bacon" at the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich, a portrayal of one of the most enigmatic and acclaimed artists Britain produced in the 20th century.

And Saturday 11 July, the Abraham Lincoln bicentenary celebrations in Hingham, which will utterly transform this quintessential English village into living history as the American Civil War Society arrives on the Fairlands with tents, horses, cannons, soldiers, music and dance.
