Nominations for a competition to celebrate community pubs and fight closures are still pouring into a Norfolk council.
With three weeks still to go before the closing date, over 160 nominations have been received for 28 pubs in South Norfolk Council's community pub of the year awards.
And it shows no signs of slowing down.
Councillor Martin Wilby, South Norfolk Council Deputy Leader, and a driving force behind the awards said:
"We knew there was a huge untapped pool of support for all of our pubs, ordinary people in our communities who don't want to see their local shut its doors for the last time.
"Pubs are the hub of our local community and we must celebrate them. These awards are catching the public mood."
Terry Osborne lives in Pulham Market, and shares her time between the village and work in London. She knows the importance of initiatives like this, and as she put it, "genuinely believes local pubs make a huge difference to their communities".
She told the council in a postscript to her own nomination: "Can I just also, finally, say how fantastic it is that South Norfolk Council run these awards - whichever pub wins I think it is an excellent scheme for highlighting the contribution that our local pubs make to village life - well done South Norfolk!"
The competition was launched on Friday 1 May. It will run through the summer with an overall winner announced this autumn.
There will also be winners in each of the five South Norfolk neighbourhoods of the district.
Every winner gets a “South Norfolk Community Pub of the Year Award” plaque, while the overall winner gets the services of the council's tourism and leisure team to run a fun event at their pub in summer 2010.
Competition beer mats in pubs promote the awards and show how to nominate a favourite pub. Pubs only need one nomination and will then get a simple application to complete.
You can nominate online at www.south-norfolk.gov.uk or text the word PUB to 80010 and tell the council which pub should win and why. This is charged at standard network rate.
Nominations must be in by 30 June 2009.
