Payments revolution at tax freeze council
Released on 22 October 2008
A Norfolk local authority which was one of the few in England to freeze council tax this year, has just launched a free and easier way to pay its bills and services.
The payments revolution means residents now have a freephone touchtone service on 0808 178 7146 available anytime every day of the year. And they can also pay online at www.south-norfolk.gov.uk
They can use the new services to pay Council Tax, national non-domestic rates otherwise known as business rates, housing benefit overpayments, invoices like brown bin renewals and for temporary accommodation.
That freephone service - alongside the council’s Do It Online facility and Direct Debit - means residents now have a bigger choice than ever before about how to pay and when.
Councillor Michelle Monck, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Heritage, Enterprise, Culture and Customer Focus said:
"It is clear that people most in need have now been able to get in touch with their council for free - even more important as we face the credit crunch and a recession. More people will need our help and now they can get in touch with us to sort this out for free!"
Over the past 12 months the council has received 14,200 freephone calls for a cost of around £2,000 to the council . The average cost per call of 17p to the council. Half of the calls are to the council tax number.
