Council Leader hits the dizzy heights…of new leisure centre climbing wall

Released on 14 October 2008

A council leader has gone up the wall over improvements to a leisure centre in Wymondham, South Norfolk.

Councillor John Fuller, who leads South Norfolk Council, almost 'hit the roof' after getting to the top of a new climbing wall - quickly followed by his daughters Susan, aged 11 and Laura, 10.

Afterwards, and with his feet firmly back on the ground, a breathless Councillor Fuller admitted:

"The climbing wall is over 10 years old. But our £5,000 refurbishment including renewing over 100 hand and footholds together with the use of structural steel overhangs has created new climbing routes.

"Some of these routes are among the most challenging in Norfolk. At least I think so!"

Councillor Fuller was at the centre with other children, young people and adults for an open day. Everyone over 8 years of age got a chance to have a go at the new routes - for free.

The wall stretches the width and full height of the centre, around 40ft to 50ft. With over 100 multi-coloured grips, easy and hard sections and three qualified instructors on hand to offer advice, centre staff got lots of interest.

Climbing lessons for real start in November.

It is all part of a £1million refurbishment programme at leisure centres focused on getting local people fit and healthy.
