South Norfolk has been awarded a London 2012 Olympic flag to celebrate the official handover of the Olympics in Beijing, China to Great Britain for 2012.

The handover ceremony, as part of the Flying the Flag – East of England Region initiative, will take place at South Norfolk House council offices, Long Stratton between 2pm and 3pm on Sunday 24 August 2008. This event will pinpoint the start of a four year build up to our Olympic legacy.

There are three key points underpinning London 2012 Olympics:

- Inspiring young people;

- Welcoming the world;

- Delivering a legacy.

Following the theme of inspiring young people, the 2008 South Norfolk Community Sport Achievers will assist with flying the flag from South Norfolk House. The flag will also be toured around schools within the district and featured in special ‘Olympic’ themed assemblies to include a focus on different cultures, sport and what to expect in 2012.

Commented South Norfolk Council Chairman, Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, South Norfolk’s Champion for young people,

"Norfolk was the first county throughout the whole of the UK to have all its local authorities signed up for this project. It has been a real team effort amongst the county and district councils and we’re extremely proud to be celebrating the Olympics in this way."

"In addition, in South Norfolk we will be launching an Olympic category in our Community Sport Achievers Award scheme."
