Give Us A Go fun day wins Play England thumbs up
Released on 31 July 2008
The national agency charged with getting children to have more fun has picked South Norfolk Council's "Give Us A Go" event as a model of what they want to see.
The fun day at Hingham Sports Ground celebrates National Play Day on Wednesday 6 August, but is also the official launch of the council's winning 'Raising The Game' project.
Councillors, staff and children have decided to mark the launch not with a ribbon cutting - but with a mass frisbee throwing!
Play England, which is leading the National Play Day celebrations, is pointing to the event as a model of its kind, and one of only a handful they have chosen in the Eastern Region.
Children and young people, from the very youngest up to 16 years of age will get the chance to try all kinds of activities from archery and slippery slide to climbing wall, ball pond, shelter building, games and other sports. And the fun is free.
There will also be a display of the Parkour craze. Next year, South Norfolk Council is planning to become one of the first in the country to build a rural Parkour site. The site just south of Norwich will be built using expert advice from the Norwich Parkour Association.
South Norfolk Councillors, who can never resist the chance to give it a go themselves, will also be at the Hingham event.
Chairman Margaret Dewsbury, and "Cabinet Member for Fun" Michelle Monck, will be joining the frisbee throwing to literally launch the council's Raising The Game project.
Councillor Michelle Monck, who's real title is Cabinet Member for Tourism, Heritage, Enterprise, Culture and Customer Focus said:
"South Norfolk is leading the way when it comes to getting more kids active and having fun!
“We have busy programme for children this year and we are committed to giving them the opportunity to join in a range of play events.
“We're planning to carry on 'Raising the Game' - our new project for play - with the introduction of facilities such as a rural Parkour site, a challenging course of low wire play using ropes, swings and a bridge, den building, tree climbing and animal tracking."
The event at Sports Ground, Watton Road, Hingham is from 10am until 2pm.
