South Norfolk Council has launched a web survey of public opinion on plans to reorganise councils in Norfolk.

The survey tests the water on a number of options which might be considered by the independent Boundary Committee.

The Committee has been asked by central Government to consider reorganisation and report back.

The survey is available here: www.south-norfolk.gov.uk/unitary

There are four key questions including one with maps. It takes only a few minutes to complete with deadline for responses at midnight on Monday April 7.

South Norfolk Council Leader John Fuller said:

"This is not a full-blown survey of public opinion in South Norfolk, but a quick web survey to take the public temperature.

"We believe that if there is to be unitary local government in Norfolk it would be best to split the county into four councils - one for Greater Norwich, one for west Norfolk and the remainder split north and south.

“It keeps councils close to their people, with areas people live in and can believe in, and makes sure they do not get too big and too remote. It is the best for Norfolk, its people, and their future.

"We also believe that merging Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft into a single council is totally unworkable and unpopular - especially in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. We urge residents to support us, and vote against the Yartoft option in our survey."

The results of the survey will be made public on the council's website.

At present, there is a Norfolk county council, six district councils and a city council in Norwich. The Government is looking at restructuring this to create fewer what it calls "unitary" councils, each of which can deliver all public services.

The council's website carries lots of information on local government reorganisation, including an archive of its responses to central Government and the Boundary Committee, which is investigating the reorganisation.
