South Norfolk car parking strategy returns to Scrutiny

Released on 06 March 2008

South Norfolk Council's proposals for free parking periods and charges returns to the Scrutiny Committee next week.

A report by Andy Radford, Head of Finance and Property, is published on the council's website and will be considered alongside other evidence being put forward to the Scrutiny Committee by campaigners, when it meets on Wednesday March 12 at 9.30am.

Committee Chairman, Councillor Christopher Kemp said:

"This is a three stage process and the public will be fully involved at each stage.

“Next week, the Scrutiny Committee will complete the evidence-gathering and I look forward to further constructive contributions from interested parties.

“Thereafter, Scrutiny Committee will make its views known to the Cabinet who will in turn make final recommendations to the Council.

"There will be opportunities for public participation in both of these latter stages."

The report to Scrutiny proposes one hour free parking at short stay council car parks and proposes a set of charges which will cover the costs of maintaining all its car parks to a high standard.

The two car parks in Church Plain, Loddon and Bullock Fair Close, Harleston will be improved during the coming months, so they reach the standards of other car parks operated by the council.

The report also says that discussions continue with Norfolk County Council over the transfer of on-street parking enforcement to South Norfolk Council, and with interested groups and town and parish councils to ensure that any changes reflect the particular circumstances of market towns.

After Scrutiny, the report will go to the Council's Cabinet on the 7 April and then to a meeting of the Full Council on 12 May.

Following the issuing of the legal orders, there will be a statutory period of consultation, with a new charging policy being effective from 1 October 2008.

The Scrutiny Committee has a full agenda for its meeting.

That agenda and and associated reports - including the car parking report - can be found at www.south-norfolk.gov.uk, and by following the links to council and democracy, and then committee minutes, agendas and reports.
