South Norfolk Council Chairman, Councillor Joe Mooney has joined thousands of people in giving soldiers of the 1st Battallion, the Royal Anglian Regiment, a heroes welcome home from Afghanistan.

The Vikings were on parade in Great Yarmouth, at a ceremony organised by the borough council, with financial support from South Norfolk Council.

Fifty troops marched through the Market Place to cheers from thousands of well-wishers, including residents from South Norfolk. The soldiers then attended a celebration of thanksgiving and remembrance, followed by a civic dinner in their honour.

Last October, Councillor Mooney got the EDP's Memorial Appeal rolling by donating the £500 he would have spent on council Christmas cards to the regimental appeal.

He told the paper at the time:

"I very much feel the Royal Anglians are our local battalion. I have nothing but respect for the bravery they have shown serving in Afghanistan.

"I think they have done a fantastic job and I am very proud of them and that is why I am delighted to support the appeal.”
