South Norfolk people are being urged to attend a "forensic examination" of South Norfolk Council's options for car parking.
The district council's Scrutiny Committee Chairman, Councillor Christopher Kemp, has said he and his committee colleagues want to hold a "forensic, evidence-based examination" of the options and the wider issue - and he wants the public to be part of that.
The Scrutiny Committee meeting will be held from 9.30am on Wednesday 30 January at South Norfolk House, in Long Stratton.
Those wishing to attend should contact Scrutiny Officer Joanna Kitchener on 01508 533602 or email her at jkitchener@s-norfolk.gov.uk so that the committee can prepare for the meeting.
Councillor Kemp said:
"This is an opportunity for the public to contribute to the decision-making process. Their views will help to shape the recommendations which we make to Cabinet."
The options under discussion will be considered in a report from the council's Head of Finance and Property Services, Andy Radford. He will attend the meeting.
These include making the first hour free in all short-stays across the whole district; having the opportunity to upgrade that first free hour to include the second hour if local people wish to contribute; and finally the opportunity for towns to take a lease on a car park, and do what they want.
The council is planning to move forward with the car parks refurbishment in the meantime.
Council Leader John Fuller, who will be attending the committee meeting said:
"We want Scrutiny to give us a clear steer on these options and on issues like the idea of permits for business and for bonefide residents, disks for doctors surgeries and the possibility of linking the upgrade to a 'shop-local' scheme.
"We have listened to the residents, and taken notice of the petition. Now we need to know what people feel about our options, and the five key principles that Cabinet agreed last year."
The car parking issue led to a 5,575 name petition, collected by Harleston campaigners and presented to South Norfolk Council at its December meeting. The Committee has had the petition analysed and the results will be available to the Scrutiny Committee.
The Scrutiny Committee examination follows debates and decisions last year in the Council's Cabinet and Full Council. It also follows a public meeting in Harleston and consultation meetings at parish and town councils in Loddon and Harleston, which were attended by South Norfolk Council leaders and senior officers.
A similar discussion on this issue also took place at the South Norfolk Alliance, the strategic partnership for the district.
As well as the wider South Norfolk public, invitations to the Scrutiny Committee meeting have also gone out to Diss, Harleston, Loddon and Wymondham Town and Parish Councils.
