A 98% response rate means that in South Norfolk, democracy is the real winner
Council Leader John Fuller
South Norfolk Council has had a 98% response rate in its efforts to get voters onto the new election register, which came into force on December 1.
The register which is completed at the same time every year, involves the council is a huge campaign to get electors in just over 50,000 homes to send back their forms, register by phone, or use the internet.
This year, around 26,000 homes returned their forms by post, over 16,000 got in touch by phone and over 7,000 used the internet.
The Council is now working to contact around 1,000 properties and has also urged anyone who thinks they are not on the register, or anyone that might have moved house, to get in touch on 01508 533686.
The figures also show that electors are opting for the easier ways to register by phone and internet, which also save the council money.
Council Leader John Fuller said:
"Back in May, South Norfolk bucked the national trend with more people voting in the local elections than for many years. This was in part made possible by the hard work and commitment of the council's elections team and their network of local canvassers who personally visit each property to encourage residents to register to vote.
"A 98% response rate means that in South Norfolk, democracy is the real winner."
