Cake, candles and a celebration of childhood brings summer of fun to a happy ending
Released on 31 August 2007
You just cannot calculate the cultural and educational value of live theatre for children when in artistic terms, their lives revolve so much around the flat screen.
Councillor Michael Windridge, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Heritage, Enterprise and Culture
South Norfolk Council's summer of holiday fun and activities came to a happy end (Friday August 31) with a giant outdoor theatre performance ... and a big birthday cake too!
Councillor Michael Windridge, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Heritage, Enterprise and Culture, joined parents and children at the Owen Barns Room at New Costessey for a free performance of Big Goldilocks and the Three Bears Plus.
It also happened to be the day Councillor Windridge celebrated his 60th Birthday so he decided to present a big birthday cake and share the celebrations with everyone.
Cllr Windridge said:
"Children spend so much of their holiday leisure time in front of TV or play station screens. So we particularly wanted them to enjoy the cultural experience of a live theatrical event.
"Big Goldilocks was a wonderful, outsize, comical performance featuring a 6ft fairy tale story book, larger than life characters, and lots of opportunities for getting involved. And everyone enjoyed my cake!
"You just cannot calculate the cultural and educational value of live theatre for children when in artistic terms, their lives revolve so much around the flat screen."
He added:
"We are determined to play our part in putting the fun back into children's lives and celebrating childhood itself. There has never been a more important time to do that in this country, than now.
"Almost 450 children, their parents and carers have enjoyed the summer holiday activities we have organised and I hope next year's programme will be even better.
"I cannot think of a more fitting way of spending a 'Big Birthday' occasion than having shared it with such a lovely group of well-behaved and appreciative children."
The Outdoor Theatre performance of Big Goldilocks by Booster Cushion Theatre - which incorporated British Sign Language - brought to a conclusion one of South Norfolk Council's biggest, most diverse and accessible holiday programmes of activities for years.
This is the second year the council has supported a tour of Children’s Outdoor Theatre to play areas around the district. Venues have included Diss, Wymondham, Tasburgh, Hingham and Barford as well as New Costessey.
