Council on track for excellence

Released on 18 April 2007

The Audit Commission has praised South Norfolk Council for the rapid pace of improvements to its services.

The positive verdict on its core services and the way things are run has been welcomed by Geoff Rivers, Chief Executive.

Last year, the Council was told that it was “getting better quicker”.

This year, the Audit Commission Annual Inspection and Audit Letter said the “pace of improvement continues to be rapid with services once again improving”.

Geoff Rivers welcomed the verdict but stressed there would be no complacency and that further improvements identifed by the Audit Commission would be carried out by the Council.

He said:

“This is excellent news for South Norfolk, and the staff along with partner agencies and the voluntary and community sector can be pleased at this recognition of their hard work and dedication.”

More specifically, the Audit Commission said:

“The Council can be pleased with the positive direction of travel”.

In particular the Audit Commission letter recognises that:

- over 80% of the Audit commission’s basket of Performance Indicators have improved (District Council average 56% over the same period).

- the Council continues to achieve in its priority areas.

- local people are benefiting from high quality services and overall the value for money is good.

- services have been adjusted to reflect public views and the Council is contributing to wider community outcomes through the South Norfolk Alliance and the Local Area Agreements.

- the council's Scrutiny is focusing on wider community issues.

- some efficiency and productivity gains have been made.

Geoff Rivers added:

“There is no room for complacency, and where the Audit Commission has highlighted areas for improvement, these will be tackled with determination and vigour ready for the Council’s re-inspection in September 2007.”
