Councils to combine on development plan for Norfolk
Released on 24 January 2007
We would like to thank our residents for the valuable help and information they have given us so far
Councillor Philip Waltham, Cabinet Member for Safeguarding the Environment
Following a new report from the Government, South Norfolk Council will now be working with Norwich and Broadland to produce a Local Development Framework for the district.
Public consultation on a vision and plan for the district up to 2021 had been well under way and was about to enter the next phases when the Government announced in a report that the document would now have to be jointly prepared with Norwich City Council and Broadland Council.
South Norfolk Council, which was well ahead in its preparation, will join forces with the others.
Councillor Philip Waltham, who leads for South Norfolk on safeguarding the environment, including planning issues, said:
"Until this decision was announced, we had made very good progress with the development framework for South Norfolk - the first stages of a full blown plan for the future.
"The Parish Councils and individual residents who took part in the initial consultation are keenly awaiting further information but the Government has asked Norwich City and Broadland Councils to work with us and produce a combined development plan. This request came from the Environment Secretary."
The Government report concerned proposed changes to the Draft East of England Plan - the regional spatial strategy.
That plan provides a framework within which local councils may produce their own more detailed development plans for each area and within the East of England.
Cllr Waltham said:
"We know we were well ahead with our South Norfolk framework and apologise for this extra delay. We would like to thank our residents for the valuable help and information they have given us so far.
"We ask them to please bear with us as we carry out the extra work needed to bring our three councils into line."
He added:
"Many benefits of joint working have been identified. For people in South Norfolk it will mean their councils having a joint vision and strategy, with the same goals and objectives.
"Nothing that we have done so far will have been wasted work and we look forward to the successful conclusion of this united effort. We now hope to be able to give more complete information in the future."
