Further information

What Scrutiny does

The Scrutiny Committee examines council policies and actions that have been agreed by the Cabinet. Although they cannot overrule Cabinet decisions, they can examine whether they are appropriate and ask Cabinet to reconsider.

Scrutiny also aims to seek continuous improvement in the delivery of services and the effectiveness of policies.

To help us decide if your topic is suitable for Scrutiny to investigate, here are some that were recently examined:

  • A review of tourism for the Broads Authority.
  • The work of the Police Authority and Police Community Support Officers.
  • A review of partnerships we have with other bodies, for example Active Norfolk, the Children’s Accident Reduction Group.

What Scrutiny doesn't do

To make sure Scrutiny’s work is most effective, members must decide what is important and produce a work programme. This programme is regularly reviewed. When deciding which topics to look at, the primary aim of the Committee is to focus on the things that improve life for the local community.

For this reason Scrutiny does not get involved with individual cases or minor matters. These should be addressed through other channels such as the appropriate service area or your local councillor. Find details of your local councillor.

Scrutiny does not deal with individual complaints, which should be directed through the Council's Complaints, Compliments and Suggestions procedure.
