Council hits back at tourism gloom

Released on 26 July 2005

South Norfolk Council has hit back at "gloomy" predictions for tourism in East Anglia, made by a Bank of England money expert.

During a fact-finding visit to Norfolk and Cambridgeshire last week, Kate Cox of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee predicted that a slowdown in spending could damage East Anglian tourism. However, Cllr Jacky Sutton - who leads the Council on tourism - said "visitors are planning their holidays in South Norfolk from as far afield as Australia and Canada".

She added: "While some manufacturing companies are feeling the pinch and slowing down a little, I think it is gloomy and unrealistic to predict a drop in tourism just yet.

"Far from sensing a decline in interest, we have been inundated with requests for our 2005 Visitors’ Guide. Many enquiries come from around England, from Cornwall to the Lake District, but we have been struck by how many have also come in from Europe and beyond.

"People from countries where we ourselves may dream of an exotic or cultural holiday - like Mexico, Syria and Japan - are contacting us because they want to come to South Norfolk."

The tourism industry is currently worth about £260m to South Norfolk’s economy each year.
