Over 60s can insulate their home for free this summer

South Norfolk residents aged over 60 are being encouraged to take advantage of a new scheme to provide them with home insulation at no cost.

The Safe and Warm Over-60s Summer Scheme is free - subject to survey - to owner-occupied or privately-rented properties in the South Norfolk district during the months of July, August and September.

Mike Rhodes of South Norfolk’s Energy Team explained:

"Insulation is not only important in the depths of winter; it also keeps a house cool during the summer and can make a big difference to an older person’s ability to stay comfortable and healthy in very hot weather.

"This summer offer combines our existing Safe and Warm scheme with HEAT Norfolk, who bypass the usual delays by allocating an installer as soon as they receive a new application.

"We really encourage eligible residents in South Norfolk to contact us about this scheme. Summer is the best time to have insulation done - most people apply in the winter, so doing it before the end of September will really cut down on waiting time."

Eric Wilkinson took advantage of the Safe and Warm scheme in March this year. The 85-year-old said:

"The workmen did a first class job - and it saved me £530. Now I don’t get cold in the winter or too hot in the summer - in fact I need fewer windows open at the moment, as they just let in the warm air.

"Insulation is great for keeping the bills down, and also helps the environment as the less my boiler works, the less gas goes up into the atmosphere. You can’t go wrong with the scheme and I sing its praises to all the people I know."
